The fourth graders have been learning about California's rich history. Long ago, California was owned by Spain. The Spanish decided to send missionaries to California. Catholic priests or other church workers believed it was their duty to teach the Native Californians about Christianity and to teach them Spanish ways. But the missions also brought in people for the new colony in Alta, California. Spain hoped the missions would raise crops and make money for the colony. |
