 Pressure for War builds

        In 1895 the Cubans tried to throw off Spanish rule. It failed and Spanish General Valerano Weyler sent thousands of Cubans to concentration Camps and one quarter of Cuba's population died of starvation and disease in those camps. Then an American warship blew up in 1898 called the Maine and two hundred sixty officers, and sailors were killed. There was no conclusion to the case but the yellow press blamed it on Spain by making papers saying Remember the MAINE ! Then more Americans were calling for war.  Then on April 19th 1898 President McKinley was given the force to drive Spain from the Island when Cuba’s independence was declared by congress.
