Farming On the plains

Farming Methods

In order to be successful, farmers needed to learn new techniques. One solution was irrigation but water was not very accessible and rarely adequate. So many of them used dry farming techniques. Every year they used half the land for growing crops, and let the other half sit for the next year so they could save moisture in the soil, or they plowed the fields deeply, or they planted fewer seeds per acre. Wheat was great for dry climates, so it became a main crop. Also, windmills were important because water was deep underground.
