Carnegie’s Roots

             Andrew’s family immigrated to the United States when he was twelve. He was the son of a poor Scottish weaver and left at 17 to work at a cotton mill in Pittsburg for low wages. He then became a private secretary to the president of the Pennsylvania Railroad company. Then he became his own boss when in the mid-twenties he bought a profitable oil well. This was the beginning of his powerful career.
