Science Lab with Mr. Boersen

The long anticipated event of the year finally happened last week – the dissecting of fetal pigs. Before the 7th graders could dissect these pigs, they had to learn about the parts they would be looking at. They learned about cells, tissues, organs, digestion, and circulation. Dissection is three-dimensional where textbook learning is two-dimensional.

Dissection gives a hands-on, kinesthetic summary of what we learned in the textbook. Fetal pigs are used for two reasons. Fetal pigs are mammals and their organs and locations are very similar to humans. Fetal pigs are also a by-product of the pork industry. Fetal pigs not used for dissection are thrown away or used for fertilizer.
This was a "thumbs up" learning experience!
One the things that amazed students most was how fragile the brain was. It was an important reminder to wear our helmets to avoid brain injuries. It was enlightening to see first hand a part of God’s creation that is not normally seen.
